Pet Memorial Plaques is a true story of a young North Dakota farm boy who experienced the loss of a beloved pet.

It was a cold April morning in the spring of 1943.  A young six year old boy and his dad drove a John Deer tractor to visit a farm neighbor, who lived about a mile away.

They stopped the tractor in the neighbors yard, and the first thing they saw was a mother dog with her small puppies playing in the yard. The young boy, as he looked at the small puppies, thought “maybe my dad will let me have one of those puppies”.
The Dad visited with the neighbor while the boy played in the yard with the puppies. The mother dog looked with a  protective eye at her puppies as the young boy played happily with her family.
The father was finally ready to leave, and he hollered at the boy that it was time to leave, the boy came running to the tractor, and with a small voice said to his dad, “daddy can I have one of those little puppies?” His dad was quite for a few seconds. and with a smile said, “well…I guess it would be alright, but you better ask the owner if it’s ok.” The owner said to the boy; “you just pick out the one you want, but take good care of him”.
The boy had already decided on the puppy he wanted, and with a happy face picked the little puppy up in his arms and climbed up on the tractor.
The boy named his little pet puppy Rex, and they romped the fields and streams together, and were always together. They were the best of friends, and you would never find one without the other, they were constant companions.
The young boy walked a mile to school every day and his dog Rex would wait patiently for him to come home, about 4 P.M. Rex would start to bark and whine with excitement, knowing his young master soon would be home.
The years passed and a six year old young man turned fourteen, and one day his beloved dog didn’t come home.
The teenage boy would look up the road and would say a prayer that his companion of eight years would return to him. Weeks went by, but Rex didn’t come home.
A few more days went by and a neighbor drove into the farm yard and told the boys dad he found the boys dog dead in one of his fields, the neighbor said it looked like a pack of wild dogs had killed him. He said he buried the dog in a grove of trees.
The dad told his teenage son what had happened to Rex. The young teenager, with a broken heart walked down the road, with tears streaming down his cheeks, and when he was away from everyone he cried like a baby, not able to stop for some time. He had lost his best friend.
Well my friends and fellow pet lovers, that young boy was me, and after 59 years the tears still come as I write this letter, and yes..I still miss him.

I wish there would have been a place to buy pet memorial plaques at the time I lost my beloved pet, but let this article about  pet memorial plaques be a memorial to Rex, my friend, so the whole world can read what he meant to me.

If there is a heaven for pets [and I think there is] than my good friend I’ll see you soon.

I hope you have enjoyed this article on pet memorial plaques.

God bless
